Flame Test

In Chemistry class today, the 8th graders performed a "Flame Test Lab" to reinforce the concepts they have been learning in chemistry regarding electron configuration. When an electron absorbs a certain amount of energy, it will jump up to a higher energy level; eventually as it loses that energy, it drops down and releases a photon of light. No two atoms have the same electron configuration so they give off a different color light. The students got to witness this as they passed different liquid compounds through the flame and observed the different colors produced.
